LAKEPORT ACADEMY

Prof. John Overholser established the Lakeport Academy in 1884, shortly before the Clear Lake College ceased to function. The school was first located in a building at the corner of Fourth & Forbes Streets in Lakeport, which had been the former Lakeport Grammar School. It originally was up on the hill, but had been moved downhill to the corner of the lot to make room for a new Grammar School. Joseph F. Edmands had a harness shop in the lower story of the first Academy. The new academy had four pupils on opening day, but sixteen before the year was over. Professor Overholser taught alone for two years. Later assistants were Miss Rooney, Miss Eloise Boone, Miss Sara Haycock.
In 1890 he built a two-story Academy west of what is now Del Lago. The Academy continued until the formation of the Clear Lake Union High School District. In 1900/1901 the Academy ended and the building was leased to the new High School District and Prof. Overholser became the science instructor in the new High School.

Lakeport, Lake Co., Cal.
1884 - 1887

Location.

Lakeport Academy is located at Lakeport, the county seat of Lake County, Cal.
The town is situated on the shore of Clear Lake in what is known to be the most beautiful and healthful portion of the State.
While it affords good opportunities for social and moral improvement, it is free from the many allurements which lead the young astray in large cities, and parents in sending their children here can feel assured that physically and morally they will breathe a pure atmosphere.

Establishment and Purpose.

The school was established September, 1884, to supplement the prescribed course of the public schools, and give pupils the opportunity of a thorough academic course of instruction.
This course enables them to obtain certificates as teachers in the public schools or to enter on a collegiate course.
A liberal and increasing patronage for the three years of its existence has demonstrated that the need for such a school, and its usefulness, is recognized by the people of this and adjoining counties, making the Lakeport Academy a prominent institution of Lake county.

Courses of Instruction.

There are four courses of instruction: English, Scientific, College Preparatory, and Normal.
An energetic pupil can take any one course and may select additional studies from the other courses.

ENGLISH COURSE.

The English course prepares the student for the ordinary requirements, both business and social, in the common walks of life. The design in instruction is to develop mind - not to collect facts.

SCIENTIFIC COURSE.

This course teaches accurate observation, and disciplines the mind for systematic investigation. Students are required to make many of the appliances required in demonstrating principles and laws in physics, and to do practical work in all studies which admit of it.

COLLEGE PREPARATORY COURSE.

Pupils completing this course will be prepared to enter the Freshman year at the State University.

NORMAL COURSE.

The normal course embraces those branches in which applicants for teacher's certificates are examined.

MUSIC.

Students desiring to study either vocal or instrumental music, in connection with the academic course, can make favorable arrangements with Miss Emma Thompson, Principal of the "Home School," who is well qualified to give a thorough musical education.
[It is in contemplation to consolidate the "Lakeport Academy" and the "Home School"; in face, a movement is now under way to form a joint stock company, and to incorporate the same under the laws of the State, for that purpose. As soon as the necessary amount of stock is subscribed, commodious buildings will be erected, which will include boarding accommodations for such as desire, on the Mount Holyoke plan.]

Pupils should enter at the beginning of the term, thereby securing the advantage of continuous study, and avoiding the discouragement attending entrance in a class after it has passed over part of the subject.

Lecture.

During the school year, evening lectures upon various scientific and educational topics will be delivered, to which the pupils will have free admission.

Library.

A good library of reference is connected with the Academy. There is also physical apparatus and a geological cabinet for the practical study of the corresponding sciences.
